well...orb is more popular since:
- FB : uses orb to save costs of resetting stats (orb uses requires dex, crystal requires str)
- FA/WI : orb has higher magic than crystals, requires less STR/DEX to wear compared to crystals (important to note if u are an FA whose STR/DEX is capped at osm/TG level - STR 113, DEX 227)
the only job that uses crystals, really, is FS. and even among FS, only sFS uses crystal.
mith m.amp has higher base dmg than phery db, but if ur crit rate is high and u crit alot, i think phery db gives more output dmg.
last time, the best setup was 1 side mithril orb m.amp, n 1 more phery db orb.
def isn't a main priority - i can solo sod with 510 def (!!!), aim for dmg. u want to kill faster, not tank longer
some other things to note:
- amp is better pve-wise, but crit dmg is better pvp-wise. although amp orb is more expensive. however in any case, mithril orb 20% cd (!) has higher dmg than mithril orb m.amp.
- ST and osm : diff in defense is only 6 per part. assuming the only ST parts u would have are boots and gloves, u would lose only 12 def. quite negligible if u ask me. if u want higher defense, go for +7 equips, instead of looking at equip grades. alternatively, raise honor n wear better earrings (ie. earring of guard +5/+6)
- tita amp : sounds less appealing than the already non-appealing ST, however, it is cheaper to extend tita. a further loss of 6 defense, vs 60 HP. your call.
- tita/phery db : cheap to extend as well, however for FA, if you are aiming for a max dmg set, there has to be rate in each 1 slot (ie. 16% dmg helm with 1slot 5% rate at least, 16% dmg db orbs with 1slot 5% rate at least for each orbs) - otherwise u lose out on c.rate (meaning all the c.dmg in the world isn't going to help u if u can't even achieve any crits at all) - otherwise just aim for a 8% rate eq with 5% rate in at least 1 slot for extending (for a total of 15% rate, 24% dmg - same like ely's helm).
- crit dmg vs crit rate : need a balance for these...too high crit rate but too low dmg doesn't necessarily make u a winner - u may crit alot, but ur crit will be weak. vice versa, too high crit dmg but too low crit rate makes ur crits a killer, but if they don't come out at all, no point having all the dmg in the world.

i think u can see the difference there in regards to def vs atk
